"Skeag" is short for Amoskeag. The Amoskeag Falls are near here. The falls played an important role in the history of Manchester. In the early 1800's there was a canal built for the purpose of navigating around these falls. Later, the canals were expanded and became the source of power for the great textile industry that developed in Manchester.
