The Notre Dame Bridge was a steel arch bridge completed in 1937. It was a replacement for the earlier bridge that was destroyed by the 1936 flood. In 1989, the Notre Dame was torn down to be replaced by a pair of 2-lane bridges of simple girder construction. Many thought the old bridge should have been saved and used as part of the new one. The steel arch itself was still OK.

This view shows what that combination would have looked like. Here I've removed a section of the new bridge along with one pier, and spanned that with the old arch bridge.  -Ron Boucher- Return
